I think depression hits people on a personal level, and effects a person differently.
I do not think that there is always a low self esteem factor. Depression can come on in anybody for a variety of reasons, however, having a low self esteem may intensify the depression in some individuals.

It depends on the cause of the depression. If the depression in an individual is caused by exterior factors (i.e. school sucks, family issues, abuse, etc.) then the self-esteem of the individual can potentially be hugely affected, or even the cause of the depression itself. If you look in the mirror every day and think, “Dang I look like crap” you will eventually start to project that negative vibe outward into the rest of your life.
On the other hand, if the depression is caused by a chemical imbalance, it could or could not affect the individual’s self-esteem. I would say it depends highly on the individual - I have known people with major depression who had awful self-esteem, and since feelings of worthlessness are one of the hallmark symptoms of the disease, that is not very uncommon.
On the other hand, some people with depression don’t think poorly of themselves at all - it’s not a matter of “I am depressed because I **** life/my job sucks/I am single/my family hates me/etc.”, it is a disease that truly alters the brain chemistry and makes it impossible to just “cheer up” or “get over it” as some people would suggest doing.
So no, it’s not a necessity for low self-esteem to be a symptom of depression, but it is one of the hallmark symptoms, so more often than not there is some issue of self-esteem in the depressed person.

Depression isn’t only about self-esteem, exactly, but it can include feelings of worthlessness and failure. Each case of depression is different, of course, so the best answer to your question would have to be “No… not always.”

Hi,
It is not a necessity to have low self esteem if you have depression.. Depression will come to different people for different reason…
